About the project

RestorEcology received approval for a 35-acre natural habitat restoration project on Edwards Branch and four tributary streams near Goldsboro, North Carolina, in Wayne County. A portion of the project sits beside a newly constructed solar farm.

The existing wooded buffers along the streams were preserved, and the cropland areas between them were planted with native hardwood trees to reduce fertilizer inputs to the streams. The photo above shows the kind of farmed drainage the project replaced: a straight ditch between crop rows with no trees to filter runoff. Over the coming years the planted buffer will shade and stabilize these channels and intercept nutrients before they reach the Neuse River.

Credits available

Nitrogen (lb) and Neuse riparian buffer credits are available for sale to offset stormwater and buffer impacts from development. The project’s service area is the Neuse River Basin, cataloging unit 03020201, excluding the Falls Lake watershed.

• Nitrogen nutrient offset credits for development that exceeds the Neuse stormwater nitrogen loading target
• Riparian buffer credits for buffer impacts authorized under the Neuse riparian buffer rule

Long-term protection

The site is protected by a recorded conservation easement and will be monitored for planting success before transfer to a long-term steward funded by RestorEcology.
