RestorEcology received approval for a 33-acre natural habitat restoration project on Horse Branch and one of its tributary streams near Grantham, North Carolina, in Wayne County. The existing hardwood swamp along Horse Branch has been preserved, and native hardwood trees have been planted across the former cropland to improve water quality.
Horse Branch drains sandy Coastal Plain farmland where cleared fields once ran to the channel edge. Re-establishing a forested buffer slows runoff, traps sediment and takes up nitrogen before it reaches the Neuse River.
Nitrogen (lb) and Neuse riparian buffer credits are available for sale to offset stormwater and buffer development impacts. The project’s service area is the Neuse River Basin, cataloging unit 03020201, excluding the Falls Lake watershed.
